Nitric oxide and prostacyclin play an important role in maintaining platelet-vessel homeostasis, especially in lung microcirculation, which, as shown in our studies, is disturbed in patients with acetylsalicylic acid- (ASA) induced asthma (AIA). Recently, researchers have shown great interest in the role of melatonin in the regulation of human physiological processes . The goals of the present study were to examine the production of nitric oxide, prostacyclin and melatonin in AIA patients and to associate these findings with blood platelet function.

PATIENTS AND METHODS
Thirty-five patients with AIA, 27 patients with ASA-tolerant asthma (ATA) and 24 healthy volunteers were studied. Patients were examined when they were in stable clinical condition. All patients received typical therapy (oral theophylline or inhaled beta-adrenergic agonists, antihistamines, sodium cromoglycate and inhaled corticosteroids [daily dose of budesonide at most 800 |ig]).

Platelet aggregation activity was studied between 09:00 and 11:00.
