Effects of hypoxia on myoglobin and antioxidant enzymes in rat myocardium (part 7)

Effects of intermittent hypoxia on antioxidant enzymes and MDA of left and right myocardium: SOD and CAT activity and MDA content from various groups were determined. SOD and CAT are antioxidant enzymes that can scavenge free radicals. MDA is a product of lipid peroxidation. As shown in Table 2, there were no significant differences in SOD, CAT and MDA between the groups exposed to normoxia and the groups exposed to intermittent hypoxia (3500 m, 6 h daily for four weeks). After six weeks of intermittent hypoxia, SOD activity increased and MDA content decreased significantly in the left myocardium compared with the normoxia group (P<0.01). CAT activity increased significantly in the right myocardium of groups that underwent intermittent hypoxia (P<0.01) (Table 2).
